Education - WCAG and ADA Joomla template updated. Check what’s changed.

| Andrzej Herzberg | Joomla Templates

We are pleased to inform that we have just released the update of JM Education Joomla school template. It comes with improvements for WCAG and ADA compatibility and bug fixes. Let's take a closer look at the most interesting of them.

WCAG 2.1 improvements

We have implemented some of WCAG 2.1 guidelines which are officially recommended from June 2018. Let's see them.

  • Added autocomplete attributes for fields in Registration, Login and Single Contact according to Success Criterion 1.3.5 Identify Input Purpose

    The purpose of each input field collecting information about the user can be programmatically determined when:

  • Added button "Readable text" in WCAG font buttons to add letter-spacing: 0.12em and word-spacing: 0.16em to BODY according to Success Criterion 1.4.12 Text Spacing

    In content implemented using markup languages that support the following text style properties, no loss of content or functionality occurs by setting all of the following and by changing no other style property:

    • Line height (line spacing) to at least 1.5 times the font size;
    • Spacing following paragraphs to at least 2 times the font size;
    • Letter spacing (tracking) to at least 0.12 times the font size;
    • Word spacing to at least 0.16 times the font size.

    Exception: Human languages and scripts that do not make use of one or more of these text style properties in written text can conform using only the properties that exist for that combination of language and script.

Other WCAG and ADA improvements

There are many other improvements for WCAG and ADA compatibility. Here is the full list:

  • Added focus style to the image in accordion of DJ-Tabs
  • Changed anchors to buttons in the contrast/layout/font switcher for better compatibility with various accessibility validators
  • Removed aria-hidden=true for the contrast/layout/font switcher. Now, screen readers will also read the switcher labels
  • Added aria roles to identify a region of the page. The region role demarcates a segment of the page that contains content of significance so that it is more readily discoverable and navigable
  • Added aria labels to provide labels for regions of the page. The purpose of this technique is to provide a label for objects that can be read by assistive technology. e.g screen readers.
